Seeking: Two Full-Time Americorps Service Positions Available at Sacajawea Elementary School

We are looking for two full-time Americorps Service members for the year.  They will be working with K-1 students on literacy and math intervention.

Americorps is more like a Peace Corps service position vs a typical job.  Service members receive a living stipend of about $12,630 per year, plus, if they complete the whole service year, they receive about $5800 as an education stipend that they can use to pay tuition at a variety of institutions or can be used to pay student loans.  **Stipends may be prorated, if less than 11 months is served.

The positions are both full time (40 hours per week).  We are seeking to fill these positions ASAP.

An ideal candidate might be a strong high school grad who is taking a gap year or is gathering resources for college.  Alternately, they could be a retired person who doesn't need the living stipend or the education stipend, but wants to pass it to their kids.  It is an 11 month work agreement and there are certain extra pieces.  Linked is a FAQ.  Pass it on if you know someone who would be a great fit.

Apply online at: my.americorps.gov
If Caldwell is not listed as a site, Lewiston probably is.  You can contact Barb Syska at LCSC about help with the app process.  Her contact info is below.

Volunteers Helped Our School During Spring Break

During vacation, Sacajawea received the gift of service from a group of 29 youth and parents from the Deer Flat youth group.  These middle and high schoolers spent Wednesday afternoon doing tasks to make Sacajawea a better place for kids. Here are some of the things they did for us.

  • Scrubbed hallway and bathroom walls to remove hand prints and marks.
  • Repositioned bark on the playgrounds to make  it a little deeper where kids tend to fall most.
  • Repainted soccer and football lines and added a football and soccer field to the primary field.
  • Tightened rock wall footholds out on the playground.
  • Dusted around rooms.
  • Disinfected desks, counters, cubbies and washed classroom sinks.
  • Wrote and hung merit award stars.
  • Assembled risers in the music room.

Thanks to the team of fantastic teens from the Deer Flat youth group.

Family Math Night - Thanks for Supporting Your Kids

On Jan. 15th, both students and parents had a fun time at the Sacajawea Family Math Night. Each grade level did a presentation on a concept that the students are learning in class. Then there was a fun math activity for the parents and their children.

The families also got a take-home math activity. Some of the parents said, “I didn’t understand this math before, but now I do!” There were three different sessions so parents could get to all of their children’s classes. After attending a session, the families also enjoyed pizza and salad. It was a great evening for all!

Thanks for supporting your kids in their mathematical success.

**Thanks to the many volunteers from the community and from Caldwell High School who helped us make this event possible.

------
