Sac Kindergartners Visit our Community Garden // Sac Kindergarten visitan nuestro jardín comunitario

The kindergarten classes embarked on a walking field trip to the community garden to kick off a social studies unit all about communities.   On our walk, we witnessed members of the community hard at work including the mailman delivering mail, construction workers repairing the street and sidewalks, a police officer keeping us safe, and busy neighbors doing yard work.

When we arrived at the garden, our young explorers dove right in by carefully peering deep into the jungle of tomato plants to spot ripe tomatoes ready for picking, helping to harvest root vegetables such as carrots and onions, and cautiously twisting prickly cucumbers off the vines.  We harvested a plentiful bounty of produce and each kindergarten scholar was able to choose one carrot and a vegetable of their choice to bring home to share with their families.

It was a joyous occasion witnessing our kids and their families coming together at our community garden. The kindergarten classes will continue exploring the important role individuals play in contributing to the greater good of the community and how deeply we rely on each other to maintain a safe and happy community.

A big warm thank you to our teachers, Volunteers, Church of Nazarene and Evergreen Heights Mennonite Church. Everyone who participated made this happen and we appreciate you all.

Sacajawea Attendance Highlights Week Ending 9/16

We have 12 classes that are at 98% or better attendance this week. That is more than half of our classes at 98% or better. Each class includes all enrolled students and also includes teacher attendance, as part of the class.

A couple highlights:
  • Every grade has at least one class on the 98% or better list.
  • Our Kindergarten team has all 4 classes in this list!
Classes at 98% Attendance or Better for the Week Ending 9/16/2022
  • 1st Place - Barbret - Kg - 100% - 0 Absences
  • 1st Place - Vorzimer - Kg - 100% - 0 Absences
  • 1st Place - Kenner - 1st Grade - 100% - 0 Absences
  • 4th Place - Morton - 5th Grade - 99% - 1 Absence
  • 5th Place - Prall - 4th Grade - 98% - 2 Absences
  • 6th Place - Richens - 3rd Grade - 98% - 2 Absences
  • 7th Place - Winden - 2nd Grade - 98% - 2 Absences
  • 8th Place - Norton - Kg - 98% - 2 Absences
  • 9th Place - Bowers - Kg - 98% - 2 Absences
  • 9th Place - Gilbert - 1st Grade - 98% - 2 Absences
  • **11th Place - Swallows - 5th Grade - 97% - 3 Absences (within 1/2 day absence of 98%)
  • **12th Place - Hurd - 4th Grade - 97% - 3.5 Absences (within 1/2 day absence of 98%)
**I included the 11th and 12th classes who were actually at 97.4ish percent, but were within a 1/2 kid or 1/2 teacher of 98%.

This level of attendance is really quite remarkable.

A couple important notes or reminders:
  • We are humans: Both our kids and teachers are human. None of us is perfect. Things come up. Appointments, urgent issues, and other priorities happen. Humans get sick. When we are sick we should not come to school.
  • Teacher Attendance is included with each class because it is important that we are there too.  We work hard to be there consistently.
  • All absences are counted in this, regardless of reason or excuse. It is important to excuse absences, but when we are gone for any reason we miss out.
  • Good attendance is considered 95% attendance (That is about 1 day or less per month, over the course of a year). If your child has 1 or fewer absences this year then they have "good" attendance at this point.
  • Great attendance: We use the target of 98% because we want to shoot higher than “good.”
  • Excessive Absences: It is considered excessively absent if you miss more than 10% of school days (lower than 90%).  That is about 18 days missed over a school year or more than 9 days in a semester. We have had 23 school days. If your child has 3 or more absences at this point, then you should be careful that the pattern doesn’t continue towards excessive absences over the coming months.
We look at this because attendance really does matter. Excessive absences, even in early grades, can have long term consequences.
