4th Grade at Sacajawea- September Blog Post

 

Fourth grade is in full swing at Sacajawea Elementary! 

Students put on their problem solving hats, right away in week one by building pencil towers and magical hoop gliders. These STEM challenges encouraged collaboration and problem solving skills. We have continued our learning in science by learning about the scientific method and inquiry. We’ve practiced our critical thinking skills, learned new vocabulary words and discovered “why” we learn science. In social studies, students started by studying the world and continents. They’ve continued their learning with maps and exploration. We are currently working on a combined Social Studies and Science unit about earth’s changing landforms.

In reading and writing, we have been working on narrative literature. Student’s discovered narrative elements, practiced identifying main ideas and details, developed their vocabulary and practiced writing several narratives. In combination with stories from our reading book, students have practiced developing flow maps and tree maps to organize story information. We are shifting focus to informational text and writing next. Ask your student what they are reading about each week and let them teach you!

Math this year began with a lot of work on place value. Students can read and write numbers to 999,999. We then used our place value understanding to practice addition and subtraction up to 1 million! Ask your student to make up some math problems at home to practice. We have shifted gears and are now working on multiplication. Please help your child memorize their multiplication facts.

¡El cuarto grado está a todo lo que da en Sacajawea Elementary!

Los estudiantes se ponen sus gorras para resolver problemas, de inmediato en la primera semana construyendo torres de lápiz y planeadores de aro mágicos. Estos desafíos STEM fomentaron la colaboración y las habilidades de resolución de problemas. Hemos continuado nuestro aprendizaje en la ciencia aprendiendo sobre el método científico y la investigación. Hemos practicado nuestras habilidades de pensamiento crítico, hemos aprendido nuevas palabras del vocabulario y hemos descubierto "por qué" aprendemos ciencia. En estudios sociales, los estudiantes comenzaron estudiando el mundo y los continentes. Han continuado su aprendizaje con mapas y exploración. Actualmente estamos trabajando en una unidad combinada de Estudios Sociales y Ciencias sobre los accidentes geográficos cambiantes de la tierra.

En lectura y escritura, hemos estado trabajando en literatura narrativa. Los estudiantes descubrieron elementos narrativos, practicaron la identificación de ideas y detalles principales, desarrollaron su vocabulario y practicaron la escritura de varias narrativas. En combinación con las historias de nuestro libro de lectura, los estudiantes han practicado el desarrollo de mapas de fluidez y mapas de árbol para organizar la información de la historia. Estamos cambiando el enfoque hacia el texto informativo y la escritura a continuación. ¡Pregúntele a su estudiante sobre qué está leyendo cada semana y deje que le enseñe!

Las matemáticas de este año comenzaron con mucho trabajo sobre el valor del lugar. Los estudiantes pueden leer y escribir números a 999,999. ¡Luego usamos nuestra comprensión del valor de lugar para practicar la suma y la resta de hasta 1 millón! Sacajawea Summer STEM Camp- Registration -- Campamento de STEM- Registración

Sacajawea Students, join us this summer for a week full of fun STEM activities! STEM camp will be about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math - STEM!

We will hold two weeks of STEM Camp. The 1st week will be for incoming 1st-3rd grade students. The second week will be for incoming 4th and 5th graders.

We are now accepting applications for our campers. Applications will be time stamped and will be taken as a first come basis. There are a limited amount of spots for each camp.

Our biggest ask is your complete commitment, in ensuring that your student makes the most of this opportunity. If a student signs up but does not attend, it takes the opportunity away from another student.

Here are some important notes about our camp:

• Camp is for students coming into the 2020-2021 school year. Sorry 5th graders- Middle school will have so many opportunities for you!
• So, if you have a kid currently in 1st grade, they will register as a second grader. 
• We will not be providing transportation. Families are responsible for getting kids to camp each morning, and home each afternoon - on time. 
• Your registration will be signed off by your student’s teacher. 
• Lunch and a snack will be provided every day.
• If all the camp spots have been filled, your student will be placed on a waiting list. If a spot becomes open, you will be notified. 
• Camp spots are reserved for Sacajawea Students only. 

When:
July 6th-10th: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Graders (next school year)
July 13th-18th: 4th and 5th Graders (next school year)

Time:
8:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m daily

Where: Sacajawea Elementary, 1710 N Illinois Ave, Caldwell.

Estudiantes de Sacajawea, ¡únete a nosotros este verano por una semana llena de actividades divertidas de STEM! STEM es Ciencia, Tecnología, Ingeniería y Matemáticas.

Tendremos dos semanas de campamento STEM. La primera semana será para los estudiantes entrando: primero, segundo y tercer grado. La segunda semana será para estudiantes entrando el 4to y 5to grado.

Ahora estamos aceptando solicitudes para nuestros campistas. Las inscripciones tendrán un sello de tiempo y se tomarán por orden de llegada. Hay una cantidad limitada de lugares para cada campamento.

Nuestro mayor pedido es su compromiso total, para garantizar que su estudiante aproveche al máximo esta oportunidad. Si un estudiante se inscribe pero no asiste, le quita la oportunidad a otro estudiante.

Aquí hay algunas notas importantes sobre nuestro campamento:

• El campamento es para estudiantes que ingresan al año escolar 2020-2021. Lo sentimos, estudiantes de 5to grado, ¡la escuela intermedia tendrá muchas oportunidades para ustedes!
• Entonces, si tiene un niño actualmente en 1er grado, se registrará como un estudiante de segundo grado.

Deer Flat Refuge - Identifying Organisms With SAC 4th Grade

 

Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge and Sacajawea have been partnering to teach students science standards. Earlier this month Deer Flat visited our 4th grade classrooms.  Students participated in  a "Who Am I?" lesson focused on learning how to identify organisms using field guides and keys. This classroom visit was in preparation for field experiences we hoped to do later this school year.  Here's to more exploration of our natural world!

Sacajawea's 4th and 5th Grade Music Program Coming Soon!

The 4th and 5th  Grade Sacajawea students are performing their music program on

Tuesday, April 2nd in the Caldwell High School Auditorium - 3401 S Indiana.

The students should arrive at 6:45p.m. The concert will start at 7:00p.m.

Students may wear their school uniforms or more formal clothes. (ex: nice dresses, ties, etc.)

Martes, 2 de abril,  en el auditorio de la Escuela Secundaria de Caldwell - 3401 S Indiana.

Sacajawea Students Attend a Boise Philharmonic Orchestra Concert

On February 7th, 100 students from the Sacajawea's fourth and fifth grades traveled to Brandt Auditorium on the NNU campus.  They attended the "Children's Concert" as presented by the Boise Philharmonic Orchestra. This was a great opportunity for our students to experience some wonderful music and to have a concert experience.

Sacajawea's 4th Grade Visits Deer Flat Wildlife Refuge!

Sacajawea's 4th grade has partnered with Deer Flat Wildlife Refuge to teach life science. Our students had  the opportunity to take their learning outdoors at Deer Flat Wildlife Refuge this week. Students learned about animal habitats, weather, how to observe, and experienced hands on fun while digging and classifying a variety of bugs. Thank you Deer Flat Wildlife refuge and our generous volunteers who chaperoned to help make this field trip a success for all students!

El 4to grado de Sacajawea se ha asociado con Deer Flat Wildlife Refuge para enseñar ciencias vitales. Nuestros estudiantes tuvieron la oportunidad de tomar su aprendizaje al aire libre en Deer Flat Wildlife Refuge esta semana. Los estudiantes aprendieron acerca de los hábitats de los animales, el clima, la manera de observar, y la experiencia en vida real, excavación y clasificación de una variedad de insectos. Gracias Deer Flat Wildlife Refuge y nuestros voluntarios generosos que acompañaron a ayudar a hacer esta experiencia exitosa para todos los estudiantes!

Celebration Park Intrigues 4th Grade Students!

On March 22nd, 4th graders ventured to Celebration Park.  This park, rich in both history and geological significance, made for a great outdoor classroom.  The students examined petroglyphs, launched atlatls, scrambled on volcanic rocks, and hiked to a historic bridge.  Despite a bit of wind and rain, the students were captivated by their unique surroundings.  We appreciate our knowledgeable guides and willing volunteers for making this day a success!

Parque Celebración  intriga a estudiantes de 4to grado! 

el 22 de marzo, los de 4to grado se aventuraron al parque de la Celebración. Este parque, rico tanto en historia como en significado geológico, nos sirvió como una gran clase al aire libre. Los estudiantes examinaron petroglifos, lanzaron atlatls, revueltos en rocas volcánicas, y caminaron hasta un puente histórico. A pesar de un poco de viento y lluvia, los estudiantes quedaron cautivados por lo que miraron al su alrededor. ¡Agradecemos a nuestros expertos guías y voluntarios dispuestos a hacer de este día un éxito!

Wagons Ho Visits Sacajawea’s 4th Graders!

On March 21st, 4th graders had the opportunity to take part in Wagons Ho.  Mr. and Mrs. C, our Wagon Masters, created an amazing back in time adventure for our students.  Students rotated through twelve stations.  They got to wash clothes in a bucket, prepare food, make authentic crafts, use a real branding iron, play pioneer games, and so much more!  We greatly appreciate the help of many 5th graders who supervised stations.  We also could not have done it without the help of several adult volunteers.  In the days and weeks after this fun event, many 4th graders were found still playing with their button spinners and donning their leather handiwork.

¡Wagons Ho Visita a los estudiantes de 4to grado!

El 21 de marzo, los estudiantes de 4to grado tuvieron la oportunidad de participar en Wagons Ho. El Señor y la Sra. C, nuestros maestros, crearon una increíble aventura de tiempos pasados para nuestros estudiantes. Los estudiantes visitaron doce estaciones. Tuvieron que lavar la ropa en un balde, preparar comida, hacer artesanías auténticas, usar un verdadero hierro de marca, jugar juegos pioneros, y mucho más! Agradecemos enormemente la ayuda de muchos estudiantes de 5to grado que supervisaron las estaciones. Tampoco podríamos haberlo hecho sin la ayuda de varios adultos voluntarios. En los días y semanas después de este evento divertido, muchos de 4to grado fueron encontrados todavía jugando con su Spinners de botón  y ponerse su obra de cuero. 

Sacajawea's 3rd Quarter Awards

Each quarter, the teachers at Sacajawea pick students that stand out in academic growth or show great character to receive an award.  Students meeting or exceeding their Accelerated Reader goal were also recognized.  The assembly to present these awards was on Thursday, April 5th.  Congratulations to all of these hard working and great students.
