Spring has Sprung at Sacajawea Elementary’s First Grade!

Sacajawea’s First Grade Students have been learning about weather, animals, and holidays.  They have been doing some typical spring activities.  Mrs. Saunders’ class made May Day flowers.  Mrs. Rohall’s and Mrs. Friddle’s classes flew kites after reading The Kite and learning about wind.  Mrs. Braun’s and Mrs. Rohall’s class learned about butterflies.  Of course, all of the teachers made sure students went home with Mother’s Day presents!  Our spring celebration was topped off with a trip to the Zoo Boise and the Discovery Center.  Thank you to all of the family members that helped chaperone this event,

Metacognition - Thinking About Thinking - Character Trait

Metacognition is our character trait for the next couple weeks.  We know that certain character traits help us be successful in school and in life beyond school.

This trait can be kind of a stealthy one because it can be invisible, happening silently inside our heads.

Metacognition means thinking about our thinking or thinking about our learning process.

We will be looking for students who are thinking about their thinking and about how they are learning.  That means they are planning and reflecting about their learning.  They are organizing their ideas.  When they get stuck in the Learning Pit they look for strategies to figure things out and to solve their problems.
  • When you are planning a strategy... that is metacognition.
  • When you are learning something new and you connect it to what you already know, you say, "Oh, that is like_________"... that is Metacognition.
  • When you are reading a difficult passage and realize you don't really understand, you might stop and read it again... That is metacognition.
  • When you ask questions to clarify your understanding...that is metacognition.
  • When you draw a quick sketch to make sure you understand a math problem...that is metacognition.

Those are all things that great learners do!

Try to be purposeful this week about your metacognitive strategies.  Look at yourself and how you are thinking and learning. I'll bet you'll notice some of your friends also showing their own metacognition.

100th Day of Kindergarten

On February 5 kindergartners in Mrs. Piper's and Mrs. Campbell's classroom celebrated the 100th day of school. Each student brought in a bag of 100 items and they weighed each bag to find the heaviest and lightest and they also counted out 100 snacks. The students also made 100th-day glasses as part of the celebration.

First Grade Penguin Experts

First graders are studying penguins. We are learning about their life cycle, habitats, predators and their prey. Students were given the challenge of putting a set of pictures into the correct order of the Penguin's life cycle. They had a great time along with great discussions. First Graders are waddling and rocking the learning this year.

4th Grade Science is Electrifying

Miss Lovell went and did it again! Knocking kids socks off and getting all of our 4th graders to jump into science with both feet! Most recently, 4th grade has been working on understanding circuits, conductors and insulators. This fun, hands-on lab allowed students to experiment with how electric currents work (and don't work) simply by using conductive clay, insulating clay, batteries and LED lights.

Learning, Food, and Fun At Math Night

Despite the crazy weather on Thursday it was a full house at Sacajawea for Math Night. Families gathered in classrooms to learn skills and activities to help them understand math better and for them to see that math can be fun. They also had a chance to visit the library and play some simple math games with cards and dice. Wrapping up the evening families gathered in the cafeteria for a pizza dinner served by Caldwell High School Senior Volunteers.
Thank you to all the teachers and staff for helping to make this night a great experience for families. Most of all thank you to all the parents and family members who came out to support the students in their learning.
