Second Graders-Collecting and Counting Money for a Good Cause

Over the last few weeks students at Sacajawea have been donating their extra change to the Student Council Fundraiser. Each year Student Council raises money to give a scholarship to a Caldwell High School student who is a Sacajawea alumni and has worked hard academically.

As the students started bringing money in Mrs. Hurd saw this as a great learning opportunity. Here is what she shared about the learning in her classroom:

" I had my class sort the money in their groups and we counted the number of each coin we had, and made tally marks to count totals. Then we got to practice skip counting by the amount they were worth to find the total value of each coin. We now get to use that data to introduce some different ways to graph the information, AND even practice adding numerous numbers together. ALL of which are concepts we are working on in second grade!"
