Sacajawea’s Family STEM Night was Fun for All!

It was so fun hearing the happy families and watching them conduct experiments on our Family STEM Night.  They were able to make ocean habitats, build cup phones, dissect plants, build bridges, measure their pulse rate, and build constellations.

We also had Deer Flat National Refuge, Micron, Caldwell High School Robotics Club, Caldwell City Wastewater Treatment Plant and  Caldwell Police Department attend to show experiments and give out information.  Thank you to the Idaho STEM Action Center for providing a grant that paid for the supplies for each student to do an in-class experiment and each grade level to have the supplies for the interactive science experiments.  The evening of experiments was capped by a chili dog dinner.

I am Tobacco Free because . . .

Teens Against Tabacco Use (TATU) visited Sacajawea's 5th graders to teach them about the effects of tobacco on the human body.  Among the activities were M&M's which represented different diseases that you can get from second-hand smoke, breathing through licorice straws to represent how it feels to breathe with emphysema, or asthma,  and unhealthy pig lungs with air being pumped into both.  Students were allowed to touch the pig lungs to feel the difference between the healthy ones and tumor filled ones.  TATU is a mentoring program that allows teens to teach other students what they have learned about tobacco use.

Donations Needed!

Every year, the Sacajawea PTO has Santa's Workshop.  This is an opportunity for students to buy two presents for family members.  Right now Tish Rice, the chair of this project, is looking for donations of items that the students can buy for a quarter.  Please look through your house, garage, and toy boxes and bring your new or gently used items to the school.  They can be placed in the barrels that are located in the entry way.  The PTO can also use wrapping paper, tape, and bows.  Thank you for any help you can give, it will bring joy to the student giving the present!

Shake Those Discs!

First grade students are learning their addition math facts.  To find the different numbers that add up to six, they shook six discs that had different colors on each side.  As they shook the discs they found the different number combinations that add up to 6. The students loved discovering these facts in such a fun way!
