Fun Run!

Here is information on The Canyon County Classic for those interested in this event.

Learning About Weather!

Mrs. Saunders' class is learning about Weather.  They practiced being weather watchers by going outside.  They looked at the sky and the ground.  They even noticed such factors as the wind and what other people were wearing to help them determine what the weather was like that day.  The students then drew what they saw.  First grade is full of learning!

Dress Up Day Tomorrow vs Picture Day (I'm Sorry)

Parents -

I want to apologize for a scheduling mistake I made.  I realized today that I scheduled a spirit dress-up day on school picture day.  Tomorrow is "Favorite Book Character Dress-up Day" and it is also school picture day.  While school pics as a Dr. Seuss character or as Harry Potter might be hilarious for Facebook, they might not be what you are hoping to hang on your living room wall or on your fridge.

So, if you aren't buying pictures and don't mind what they look like, send them as Junie B Jones or another book character.  If you really want great pics for your family, then ask them not to dress up.  If they are really disappointed about missing out on their character, they could come as their character on Wednesday instead of dressing like a teacher or principal.

If pictures turn out badly, retakes are on November 9th.

Please accept my apology if this causes any conflict between you and your kids.

I'm sorry.
Mr. Webster

Ugh, Poor Air Quality Again

We really don't like to keep kids in for indoor recess.  We believe it is important to get out and play.  However, the air quality has been pretty bad recently, with smoke from a variety of forest fires trapped in the Treasure Valley.  We typically stay inside for indoor recess when the air quality is at level red (Unhealthy).  It is looking like today will probably be at level red all or most of the day.

We will go back outside if the current air quality improves to yellow or orange.  If your child has respiratory problems please let our nurse know if you want them to be kept inside, even when the air improves to level orange.

Here are the sites we use to monitor air quality.
  • - This gives a general overview for the whole region.
  • - I'm pretty geeky, so I like to look at the current raw data from the closest measuring stations.  The closest one to us is in Nampa.
Just a geeky note: The yellow and green dot on this map come from stations that measure different air quality data.  The bad ones right now are small particulates.  Those stations just don't measure small particulates.  The yellow and green dots make it look like the air is better there.  It isn't.  They just aren't measuring the most important thing right now.

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Teaching About the Solar Eclipse!

Having a solar eclipse in our area became quite a unique teachable moment!  Students did several activities in class activities to learn about solar eclipses.  Some of them included:

  • Watching videos explaining what occurs during a solar eclipse
  • Building models of the moon orbiting the earth and the earth revolving around the sun
  • Testing how the moon’s shadow could fall on the earth with a flashlight (the sun), a ball of clay (the moon), and an orange (for the earth)
  • Studying and testing that shadows move based on the position of the sun in our sky
  • Mimicking and drawing the stages of contact during an eclipse using Oreo cookies

Many students watched the solar eclipse with their families.  When talking about it in class the next day, one girl said, “It looked like the moon took a bite out of the sun!”  Another boy said, “It was the best day of my life!”
Our staff would like to thank Donor’s Choose for donating the glasses so families could look at the eclipse safely.

KTVB Highlights Community School Partnership With United Way and Sacajawea

Thanks, KTVB, for representing our heart and our mission to serve kids and families at Sacajawea. Thanks to the United Way of Treasure Valley for partnering with us.

All of us face barriers between us and success.  Some of our kids face extraordinary barriers.  Homelessness is a barrier for some of our kids.

Barriers don't have to stop us from reaching success.  Sometimes, though, it helps to have a little extra support.  That's just what we do.  We support kids and families in reaching success.  We connect them to resources in our community to help them climb over the barriers in their lives.

Don't let anything stop you, Skyhawks! We solve problems.  That's what we do.

Yotes Football Team Reads at Sacajawea

Thanks to the College of Idaho Yotes football team for coming to Sacajawea to read with our students yesterday.  Smiles all around.  Please come back to read again.  We also have all kinds of other ways to get involved, if you want to learn how to work with students, become a teacher, social worker, or just about anything else that makes a difference for kids.

Here is an album with one or more photos from most of our classes (Sorry, I had one or two classes I missed or got to too soon).
