First grade students are learning their addition math facts.  To find the different numbers that add up to six, they shook six discs that had different colors on each side.  As they shook the discs they found the different number combinations that add up to 6. The students loved discovering these facts in such a fun way!

Opera Came to SAC

We had a special opportunity to experience Opera Idaho at Sacajawea yesterday.  Their performance of Elixir of Love was outstanding.  Several of our kids were able to sing along in the chorus and Estrella and Raven had small speaking parts.  The setting of the story was in the old west and the story included universal human themes like love, trust, and sacrifice.  Our students rooted for the heroes and despised villains.  The plot included some surprises.

The vocal talent of the performers was outstanding.  Our students got a chance to ask them questions after the performance.

Thanks, Opera Idaho.

Parents, ask your kids to tell you the plot of the story.  I've tried to put them in order. That is a great language activity.

Seeking: Two Full-Time Americorps Service Positions Available at Sacajawea Elementary School

We are looking for two full-time Americorps Service members for the year.  They will be working with K-1 students on literacy and math intervention.

Americorps is more like a Peace Corps service position vs a typical job.  Service members receive a living stipend of about $12,630 per year, plus, if they complete the whole service year, they receive about $5800 as an education stipend that they can use to pay tuition at a variety of institutions or can be used to pay student loans.  **Stipends may be prorated, if less than 11 months is served.

The positions are both full time (40 hours per week).  We are seeking to fill these positions ASAP.

An ideal candidate might be a strong high school grad who is taking a gap year or is gathering resources for college.  Alternately, they could be a retired person who doesn't need the living stipend or the education stipend, but wants to pass it to their kids.  It is an 11 month work agreement and there are certain extra pieces.  Linked is a FAQ.  Pass it on if you know someone who would be a great fit.

Apply online at: my.americorps.gov
If Caldwell is not listed as a site, Lewiston probably is.  You can contact Barb Syska at LCSC about help with the app process.  Her contact info is below.

Third Grade Reading Celebration

On Thursday the 3rd grade students celebrated their reading success in AR reading by doing more reading! In August and September, third graders read and tested on a combined total of 1,504 books in AR. The students brought pillows, blankets, and their favorite stuffed animals and throughout the day when they completed their work they would sit with friends and read some more.

Each student also had a personal AR points goal they were working towards. If the students met their goal they received an additional treat of a root beer float and a movie.
