First Graders' Experiment!

The first-grade classes did a science experiment to see what would happen if they put some chemicals on charcoal. Prior to the experiment, they had to predict what they thought would happen. They made the following predictions:

-The charcoal would turn gray.

-It would catch on fire.

-It would explode.

-The charcoal would turn into water.

-The charcoal would turn into oil.

-The charcoal would turn into a tornado.

Come to our Science Night on Thursday from 6:00-7:30 to see what happened to with their science experiments!

Sacajawea's Olympic Trials

To celebrate Healthy Kids Day the YMCA and Mr. Thomas joined forces to give Sacajawea students an action-packed day of fun and exercise. In honor of the upcoming summer Olympics, the event began with the staff and students singing the national anthem, led by Miss Chavarria, before they headed off to the different events to compete in.
Thank you Mr. Thomas and the YMCA volunteers for organizing such a wonderful event for the Sacajawea students!

Spring Carnival

Thanks for coming out for our Spring Carnival. What a fun time we had with you and your families. We loved watching them dance to The Falcons + Ms. Chavarria. We enjoyed watching them giggle, play, build towers, eat, celebrate, and get kissed by a camel. What a great night. We flexed with a seriously rainy evening.

The Sacajawea PTO raised more than $2000 to contribute to activities, field trips, extra equipment, and enrichment for our students.

Thanks to the following people who worked over the last couple months to coordinate this activity. There are numerous others. Many worked all day long yesterday getting things ready. Teachers put in extra hours to spend time with our kids and families and to run fun activities.

Coordinators:

Grit

We know that certain character traits lead to success in school and in life.  Our new character focus this week and next is Grit. Grit is a little word that has a big meaning.  It makes a huge difference in our lives.

  • The Definition of Grit: Unyielding courage in the face of hardship or danger.
  • Other words that are similar to grit are Toughness, Guts, Determination,

Some examples of Grit:

  • The American pioneers had grit when they chose to cross mountains, rivers, plains and all kinds of weather to get where they wanted to go.
  • Sacajawea must have had grit when she led Lewis and Clark on their brutal adventure through the mountains, and all of that with a baby on her back.
  • An athlete has grit when they dive to catch a loose ball or when they slide into home plate.
  • A student has grit when they work their very hardest at something, even when it is not easy for them.  You can almost see the brain sweat when they are determined to figure something out.
  • I can see grit in our students when they work out hard math problems on scratch paper, making it visual and then breaking it down into an equation or math sentence.
  • I can see grit in our students when they plan out their writing to make it great, even though it would be easier just to throw together a short response.

For both adults and kids, we are guaranteed to have some hard times on our way to success.  Grit mean we stubbornly refuse to quit and we keep pushing towards success. Grit means we do our very best, even though that may mean we risk some scrapes and bruises along the way. It makes me so proud of our students when they show grit.

4th Grade Scientists Dig in to Squid

At Sacajawea, 4th graders dove into their Animal Defense Mechanisms Unit through a hands-on dissection lab this week. Students were trained on appropriate lab safety and learned about animal organ structures and functions. Using squid, they were able to identify each structure and function, as well as have some extra time to use scientific inquiry to explore their species!
Thank you to Syringa Middle School for loaning us the dissection equipment and tools!
