A Book and A Bite 2019 Has Started in Caldwell!

Sacajawea Elementary was anxiously waiting for the 2019 start to A Book and a Bite, a summer literacy program for kids of all ages. On Friday, June 7th with the help of Windemere Realty we were able to kick off our summer season of fun, free books and so many free activities. We would like to thank the staff of Windemere Realty for taking the time to come out and help us promote our program. 

Our normal program began Tuesday, June 11th at Luby Park. We anticipated a larger crowd than our kickoff event, the weather was going to be much nicer. We of course exceeded our expected number with so many happy faces and eager learners. Sacajawea Elementary would not be able to make this happen without the support from RISE- Treasure Valley Education Partnership. This is the second year that RISE helps support A Book and A Bite at Sacajawea. 

Sacajawea’s A Book and A Bite on Tuesday was made a success by the great work of Delta Dental of Idaho, Caldwell Public Library, University of Idaho 4-H Extension, Idaho Public Television, Oasis Food Center, Sacajawea staff, the amazing community volunteers and the City of Caldwell Parks,for letting us use their location this summer.

A Book and A Bite 2019- ¡Comenzó en Caldwell!

La Primaria Sacajawea estaba esperando ansiosamente el inicio de A Book and a Bite 2019, un programa de aprendizaje de verano para niños de todas las edades. El viernes 7 de junio, con la ayuda de Windemere Realty, pudimos comenzar nuestra temporada de verano de diversión, libros gratis y tantas actividades gratuitas. Nos gustaría agradecer al personal de Windemere Realty por tomarse el tiempo para ayudarnos a promover nuestro programa. 

Nuestro programa normal comenzó el martes 11 de junio en Luby Park. Anticipábamos una multitud más grande que nuestro evento de lanzamiento, el clima iba a ser mucho mejor. Por supuesto, superamos nuestro número esperado con tantas caras felices y estudiantes ansiosos. La Primaria Sacajawea no podría hacer que esto sucediera sin el apoyo de RISE-Treasure Valley Education Partnership. Este es el segundo año que RISE ayuda a apoyar A Book and A Bite en Sacajawea.

Second Grade Ends School with STEM Activities!

Sacajawea’s second grade students ended the year with STEM activities.  In Ms. Burton’s class they received the challenge of designing a robot that could make a marker write unassisted on paper.  They worked in teams using electric toothbrushes as their batteries.  Some were definitely successful!  

In Mrs. Friddle’s class they studied wind energy during the week.  On Friday, they did an activity where the goal was to design the fastest spinning windmill blades.  After they designed them, they tested them using a fan.  The student with the fastest windmill didn’t want to test his at first because it looked different from everyone else.  Soon all the other students were trying his design!  

In Mrs. Prall's classroom students walked into a room full of recycled materials. They were then grouped into teams and provided a challenge of making a water slide that had at least one twist or turn, could hold water, had a ladder and could safely carry a marble from the top to the bottom. The students worked together using innovative ideas to build their water slides, test the slides and make changes.  

Ms. Vrooman’s class studied space the last week of school.  They got to culminate this research by watching a space mission.  What a great way for these students to end their second grade year! 

Rain Doesn’t Stop Sacajawea’s Field Day!

On Tuesday, May 21st, Sacajawea held its annual Field Day and it was pouring rain!  With some quick thinking by Mr. Endy De La Cruz, our P.E. teacher, stations were set up in hallways, classrooms, and the gym.  The students were able to participate in musical chairs, cup-stacking, balancing balls on rackets, the pool float carry, corn hole, tug of war, scooter races, passing objects with feet, flying paper airplanes, moving balls with no hands, and of course, the snack station with Otter Pops!  The halls were filled with laughter as the students participated in these events.  Thanks to Mr. De La Cruz for planning and overseeing this event.  Thanks also to the staff that helped run the stations.  It was a great day!

Growing Kids, Growing Food, Growing Community

Sacajawea’s Community School and Canyon Hill Church of the Nazarene have been collaborating on a mission to get healthy and fresh produce into the hands of families! With the support of United Way of Treasure Valley and Trinity Health, the Canyon Hill Community Garden is in its second year of production. 

The garden came about after Paul’s market was shut down, the market served so many of our Sacajawea families. After that, the Church and Sacajawea both knew there was a need to meet. The Church been a great supporter of our community school and they house the garden on their property. The garden is located at 903 N Michigan Ave, Caldwell, Idaho 83605.

The garden is composed of 12 raised beds, a pump house, a shed, 10 orchard trees and an area big enough to plant corn and all types of melons! 

None of the work would be accomplished without the generous help from so many great community organizations, such as Canyon County 4-H Extension, Evergreen Heights Mennonite Church,  the members of Canyon Hill Church of the Nazarene and the families of Sacajawea Elementary!

Canyon Hill Community Garden is so excited for its 2nd year of planting, growing and harvesting! The garden is always looking for helping hands to help maintain it!

Sacajawea's Community School y Canyon Hill Church of the Nazarene han estado colaborando en una misión para poner productos frescos y saludables en manos de familias! Con el apoyo de United Way of Treasure Valley y Trinity Health, el Canyon Hill Community Garden está en su segundo año de producción. 

El jardín surgió después de que el mercado Pauls se cerró, el mercado sirvió a muchas de nuestras familias de Sacajawea. Después de eso, la Iglesia y Sacajawea sabían que era necesario reunirse y ayudar. La Iglesia ha sido un gran socio de nuestra escuela comunitaria y ellos albergan el jardín en su propiedad. El jardín está ubicado en 903 N Michigan Ave, Caldwell, Idaho 83605.

El jardín se compone de 12 camas elevadas, una casa de irrigación, un cobertizo, 10 árboles frutales y un área lo suficientemente grande como para plantar maíz y todo tipo de melones. 

¡Ninguna parte del trabajo se lograría sin la ayuda generosa de tantas organizaciones comunitarias, como la Extensión 4-H del Condado de Canyon, la Iglesia Menonita de Evergreen Heights, los miembros de la Iglesia del Nazareno de Canyon Hill y las familias de la escuela Sacajawea!

¡El Jardín Comunitario de Canyon Hill está tan emocionado por su segundo año de plantación, cultivo y cosecha!
